Natalia graciously volunteered to be the HSMG Forum Moderator recently and is doing a great job! She lives in Guatemala and began soaping only about a year ago. She had recently quit her job, needed income and wanted to do something special with her life. In October of 2009, she decided to become a full time soapmaker. Check out her website at EnJabonArte!

Like many of us, the beginning wasn’t easy but she is happy to keep reaching her dream of having her own melt and pour soapmaking business. Natalia loves what she does with glycerin soap, because it’s an easy expression of her own art, by adding almost any oil, extract, herb, etc. to make it great on the skin, “Almost as a CP soap (almost!) but i can use it immediately when is done. “ she says.

Natalia said “Thank God, people love my soaps and people started to ask me to teach them, so now I give basic glycerin soapmaking classes too.” Natalia does well as a Sworn Translator and Marketer, but is sure that making glycerin soaps is her thing!

Please join Natalia for interesting soap related discussions on our HSMG Forum!

Ela McAdams volunteered for HSMG Social Media and helps out on Facebook. Her interest in making soaps and other toiletries grew out of a love of herbs. She has been teaching soapmaking (MP, CP and HP), balm making, lotion making, candle making and other crafts for about 15 years. Since she loves to talk soap and other crafts she has been a moderator on some popular soap forums so you may recognize her from there.

This past conference in Denver was her first HSMG Ela said, “I was so impressed with everything, I learned a lot, and I got to meet in person a number of my crafting “heroes”, including Marie Gale, Debbie May, and Anne-Marie Fiola. I can’t wait to see everyone again.”

Attached are her favorite soap projects, her wedding favour soaps. She was married on a cruise ship so thus the “beach theme”. She used rubber flip flop erasers, cornmeal and clear MP to create a scene of twin flip flops on the beach, sticking their toes in the ocean.

Ela, looks forward to getting to know everyone better!

In 1996 Debbie May was working as a registered nurse and unexpectedly gave birth to a disabled daughter. As her family struggled, Debbie learned the art of soap making and eventually started a small home based business named “May Showers”. Her products eventually sold coast-to-coast through retail stores, craft shows, home parties, and fundraisers. The money earned allowed her to pay the extra medical bills and put food on the table.

In 1998 Debbie was at a craft show and was approached by a woman hand making holiday ornaments. This woman asked Debbie if she was willing to teach her how to make soap. She went on to explain that she needed to learn a good selling craft to supplement her household income because her husband had recently lost his job. Debbie quickly said yes and gave this woman private classes. It was at that time that Debbie realized that her situation was not unique and many families could use help and extra money to “make ends meet.” Debbie was excited and passionate about helping others and it was this enthusiasm that led Debbie’s mother, Karen, to buy her a used computer. It was this computer that allowed Debbie to take care of the kids during the day and teach online classes (through chat lists and message boards) at night.

1999 Debbie May established Wholesale Supplies Plus as a means to provide the public with affordable, professional quality soap making, skincare and candle making supplies. The company offers home based businesses the same access to high quality materials that had previously only been available to large businesses. Due to the company’s success, within 5 years Debbie’s husband Dave left his job teaching high school and came to work for Wholesale Supplies Plus.

Although the company has grown, every customer is still given individual attention and the highest level of customer support. The company motto remains “Your Success Is Our Business”. Wholesale Supplies Plus currently stocks over 2,000 products that are packaged and ready to ship. They employ over 35 staff members and continue to help over 100,000 customers.

Because Debbie and her husband Dave have been personally touched by Autism, when you place your order with wholesale supplies plus you will have the opportunity to make a donation to Life Center for Autism; a charity they established to honor their commitment to give back to the community in which they operate. Life Center for Autism has the mission to socially enhance the lives of those who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. This is a federally recognized charity and Wholesale Supplies Plus will gladly match all customer donations.

In 1908, Lebermuth Company was founded by a farmer named Morris Brown and his family. They traded in farm produce until they discovered the value of essential oils when someone used peppermint oil to barter for produce. The company began as M. Brown and Sons and while headed by Morris Brown’s direct descendant, Irvin Brown, merged with Lebermuth Company in 1974. Today the Company still prides itself on providing the best possible service and quality products available.

Angie Carter will be attending the HSMG Conference for the third year in a row along with Rob Brown, Irv Brown and Eve Hardin, who is an inside sales representative for Lebermuth. Angie will be manning the Lebermuth booth and asks that you to stop by to say hello. She is proud of the fact that Lebermuth has been supporting our Conference for many years.

Angie stated she supports her customers whether they buy from Lebermuth once a year or every month. Lebermuth offers essential oils, organic essential oils and natural and synthetic fragrance oils. She proudly emphasized that they offer everything for soap and candle making, as well as decorative botanicals. They source essential oils from around the world and have direct relationships with the farmers who grow them.

Lebermuth’s strict quality control ensures that everything meets their specifications prior to being purchased and then again prior to leaving their facility to the customer. In addition, Lebermuth manufactures its own fragrance oils under strict quality conditions. Angie said they are tested by an experienced professional soapmaker prior to being sold to any customer.

Lebermuth is located in the midwest and ship orders within 72 hours. They can be reached by calling customer service at 574.259.7000 or e-mailing info@lebermuth.com.

Angela Buckley, an engineer by trade and environmentally conscious consumer by passion, founded Celtic Naturals in 2009. As a mother, triathlete and professional, it was difficult to find affordable, natural skin care products. She founded Celtic Naturals after years of being exposed to chemicals and realizing that despite precautions, her skin still reacted to them. She also noticed a trend of product lines referred to as “natural,” when components of the product weren’t; in addition to some natural-labeled products that hadn’t taken into account the larger carbon and social footprint, such as shipping, production of essential oils, and similar pieces of the production footprint.

So Angela founded Celtic Naturals, which delivers great soaps and skin care to its customers, along with a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. However, Celtic Naturals offers more. By visiting the education page, readers can learn more about the soapmaking process and have other questions answered about natural skin care.

Angela’s Milestones: She said “In less than one year, I’ve introduced more than 25 products to the market. I’m currently retailed online and in 2 stores. This week I was named the Official Soap of HFP Racing. Podium finishers for the Girls Tri Too series will be receiving a bar of Celtic Naturals Sport Line soap along with their medals.”

From Angela’s education and work experience, she knows the importance of assuring consistent product quality. Safety is her number one priority. As a single business owner, her systems are in place for an entirely different reason. She said “Where before I wrote job instructions so everyone would do it the same way every time, I now write job instructions for myself. They keep me honest, they establish trust with reporters, bankers and my customers. My documentation is not nearly as extensive as it was when I worked for large manufacturing companies, but certainly sufficient enough that when the day comes for me to hire an employee, they will be safe and provide a consistent quality. I look forward to that day!”

Angela intends to be a full time soapmaker. For now, she currently uses her other skills as a consultant to develop startup capital while this business grows. Angela found the HSMG online. Certainly as a starting point, she found insurance was a great point and was very grateful for the list of vendors. It made her start of the development much easier.

Angela suggests to have fun. Persevere. Read and try. Read and try again. Start by selling to your friends. Unless you are an accomplished entrepreneur, start slowly. Rely on friends and family for support, advice and help. Label chemicals clearly and store them safely.

Today, she focuses on continuing her education about natural products and how they support skin care, and smarter natural skin care processes. She and her husband live in Dublin, Ohio, with their son.

Her business began in 2008 when she was unable to return to her previous career. She just celebrated a first full year in business this past August.

She opened an online store last summer and won second place presenting her product line in an Art Festival. Her husband built her a soap studio when soap took over the house, and had a grand opening ribbon cutting this past November.

The best thing she has learned so far is to let the business grow organically to avoid spinning her wheels. She says, “I do the next right thing and new opportunities continue to present themselves. I have learned not to be in such a hurry. Soap takes time and so does a well lived life.”

Gwen is a full time soapmaker when she is physically able to do so. Gwen likes to read, cook, do needlework and as well as owns an amazing perennial flower garden and vegetable garden. She is a member of Soroptomist International which focuses on improving the lives of women and children locally and throughout the world.

She found the HSMG online when searching for ideas. She joined for many reasons:

to have insurance

to learn and ask questions

be of service in some way

It is the “water cooler” around which soapmakers can chat, share ideas, commiserate, whatever is needed.

Gwen is an HSMG Volunteer and serves on the Social Media Committee.

Gwen’s advice on getting started in soapmaking is to buy serious soapmaking guides. Susan Miller Cavitch is her soap bible. Start small and simple and work your way up. She emphasizes to take the safety warnings very seriously and treat lye with respect. However, she guides to be adventurous and give yourself permission to make mistakes.

Clinical studies have shown that the simple hygiene practice of washing one’s hands with bar soap can reduce these deaths by up to 60%.

The HSMG invites our membership, as well as non-members, to join in our support of the Clean the World, Inc . Clean the World (CTW) is a non-profit, charitable organization that recycles soap, shampoo, and lotion discarded by hotels and distributes the recycled products worldwide to people who cannot afford these essential items. It is our pleasure to work with CTW and help to prevent disease throughout the world. HSMG and CTW are extremely grateful to you for any amount of a soap donation or monetary donation.

Here is how it all began. Clean the World Presentation

Together we can make a difference in the lives of people who really need our help. Why not send your soap that didn’t come out so perfectly? You know, the so called “ugly” soaps that are still usable can be donated. Even the old or soap ends are accepted. The soap is rebatched and purified at CTW before being sent overseas. Another way to donate is to couple with others or organize a soap drive.

Just ship your much needed donation to:

Clean The World

Attn. Steve Cooper

4625 Old Winter Garden Rd. #B7

Orlando, Florida 32811

Please enclose a note in your shipment that you are participating in the HSMG Soap Donations Program and let us know when you ship, mgelnett@soapguild.org , so we can recognize you for your generosity.

If you choose to do a monetary donation, just click the donate button on their website, www.cleantheworld.org , every $1 donation will recycle two hotel rooms for an entire month. That equates to 40 bars of soap and 40 bottles of shampoo that will not hit our landfills and water systems, but instead supply 5 needy families with a life saving necessity for ONE MONTH.

Shawn Seipler – Executive Director reports

Dear friend,

Today in Haiti a terrible tragedy struck. Just ten miles from the most populous area near the city of Port-au-Prince a powerful earthquake devastated the country. The government of Haiti is calling it a catastrophe and reaching out the world for help.

As you know Clean the World has been working to continuously deliver soap to Haiti through the Cap Hatien Health Network and the Evangelical Church of Haiti. We have made many friends and connections throughout the country. We are now hearing terrible stories of tragedy and death from these friends.

We knew the need was great before, now the need is greater than ever. In the coming days and weeks, aid will start to reach Haiti and Clean the World is determined to be there. We have soap ready to go. We need cash donations in order to deliver it to those that need it so badly. Some will deliver medical aid, some will deliver food and water, with your help Clean the World will deliver soap. This soap will be critical in saving lives.

Please go to our website and donate whatever you can. www.cleantheworld.org

Thank you. And pray for our bothers and sisters in Haiti.

Shawn

Immediate update as of 1/13/10:

We cannot reach any of our friends in Haiti. Pastor Brutus will update us as soon as he can get through. This is a terrible disaster. Haiti does not have California style building codes. The need for aid will be monumental in the coming weeks. Many will focus on food, water and medical attention. Clean the World is focused on soap. Without soap, many will die from preventable illnesses. We have stores of soap ready to go to Haiti. We need your cash donations to get the soap delivered. Please go to www.cleantheworld.org and donate whatever you can. And please pray for the safety of all our Haitian friends. Thank you.

Please consider helping us save the lives of children all over the world! Together, we can make a huge difference in this life saving element that can change history. Any questions, please contact Board of Directors, Public Relations Director, Delores Harris at deloresh@soapguild.org .

While learning to make cold process soap at a home class, she was nervous and a tad intimated of terms like trace, lye, and saponification, just like many of us were. The first time she saw trace, she was instantly in love. She now calls it the start to her “addiction”. The teacher gave Melissa a bar scented with sandalwood essential oil and that was it, she was hooked. She now realizes that was a defining moment that would change her life forever.

chillpillbars

Soap integrates with Melissa’s work and lifestyle, being an organic vegetarian, buys local and fair trade and lives simply and responsibly. Creating healthy, handcrafted and natural soap just seems like an extension of what she stands for. As an RN, she knows that basic hand washing and hygiene go a long way to stop the spread of illness and disease. She states, “It really seems simple to me, soap, its something we all take for granted, something that can save peoples lives, something that women everywhere can be taught to make with a few supplies, a bit of education, and hope.”

World’s Largest Bar of Soap

One of Melissa’s largest accomplishments, so far we should say, was the making of the World’s Largest Bar of Soap, in memory of her Mother. On March 5th, 2003, her dream and what many deemed an impossible task came to pass – Tons of Suds for Scleroderma. Melissa’s best friend, co-creator, Angela, and a few hundred volunteers mixed and poured 8.5 tons of soap. Yes, tons! From a budget of only $900, raised from weekends of car washes, the project’s true cost is over $250,000. Many generous people and companies gave their support through things like generators, cranes, port-a-potties, colorant, fragrance, flatbeds and lights. The XXXL soap even survived being hit by a tornado out in the middle of the ranch. Melissa found the entire project a way to cope with her Mother’s death one year earlier. She jokes. “Once again, soap is therapeutic.” Her goal to educate people about Scleroderma was accomplished along with some fundraising for the Foundation.

Haiti Soap Distribution

Still today, the big soap continues to change lives by sending it all over the world. There are still almost 2 pallets left!! Her website www.bodybalms.com, under - Help Scleroderma Research, See our 8.5 TON bar of soap! Organic Soaps & Toiletries – shows the press release and continues to track bars sent to good causes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZZqbqYiHPA

Her latest and a very exciting accomplishment is helping to establish a NPO called, The Nourish Collective nourishing spirit, body, and land, to teach women in developing countries to make and sell soap. It is her hope to empower women to change their communities, their health, and their future.

The Nourish Collective has a fourfold Mission:

1. Empowering Women through Education.

2. Supporting and equipping communities.

3. Promoting Hygiene, Health, and Sanitation.

4. Improve Environmental Sustainability.

Melissa has learned. “If you have a dream, just take the first steps and do it. Dreams shouldn’t be left for later, tomorrow may not come. The time is NOW. Be engaged in life, don’t settle for just being present.” The initial idea for the NPO, The Nourish Collective , started almost the minute she learned to make soap. Melissa and Angela (her best friend) brainstormed ways to empower, help and educate women while helping to decrease death and illness. They both have a strong desire to help women overseas and volunteered for all sorts of groups like Invisible Children and held fundraisers for Bead for Life. After Melissa’s recent trips to India, Ethiopia, and Mongolia, she got serious and said “Let’s just do it”. Within a week, their paperwork was submitted and approved. Next stop, Africa in June, to teach women how to make soap along with businesses classes, hygiene and basic healthcare classes. They are currently sourcing supplies, storefronts and program development

Her real passion is volunteering with Operation Smile. This past year, she worked as a pre/post op nurse in India and Ethiopia repairing cleft lips, palates and burn reconstruction. One can only imagine the challenges, but in February, she is heading back to India in the hope to do 1,000 surgeries in 12 days!!

More than 200,000 children are born with a severe cleft condition each year — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile and their parents can’t afford the surgery. Operation Smile — through the help of dedicated medical volunteers like Melissa — is making a huge difference in more than 50 countries. Every medical mission gives each child a Smile Bag (see below). Inside the bag are a mirror, toothbrush, washcloth, toys and SOAP! The following morning, after surgery, the kids are able to wash their face and take a look at their new smile. Operation Smile is in need of travel/hotel sized soaps to put in these Smile Bags. If you can help, just email Melissa for a form (sample below) at bodybalms@aol.com . Send the form and any small bars of soap to Operation Smile Headquarters at:

Melissa and the HSMG thank you in advance for helping to change lives.

All this and Melissa is a full time ER RN at the county trauma center. She started first as an EMT, completed paramedic school, before getting her RN license about 2.5 years ago.

Melissa loves being a part of the HSMG especially the conventions. She says, “Where else can you go and talk to people about oil properties, saponification, and the agony of a completely botched batch of organic oils without getting a blank stare?” She thinks, and we agree, that soapmakers are the most creative, compassionate, sharing and giving group of people you can meet. Melissa shares that she has always felt so supported and encouraged by the members she knows and walks away with new inspiration and motivation.

Melissa’s advice to those getting started in soapmaking – “Try to find a local soapmaker to teach you. Research and read a lot about soapmaking. Get involved with the HSMG. It is truly one of the greatest resources you can find! Experiment! I often find myself translating life into my latest soaps. Masala soap inspired by India is next on my list!”

Melissa is never bored. Always trying something random, her current projects are sprouting, Kombucha tea brewing and raw food fasts; and just recently became a Certified Clinical Aromatherapy Practitioner.

Operation Smile – Items and Supplies for Donation Smile Bags

Upon completion of their surgery, each child receives a “Smile Bag” that is filled with small sized personal care items. These bags are 12 inches wide by 14 inches deep (to fit a coloring book). The bags have a drawstring placed so that they are filled from the top. Operation Smile has a full-time volunteer staff that fills the smile bags which ensures that each child on the same mission receives the same items.

Each Smile Bag contains the following items:

.85 to 1.4 oz shampoo (screw-on top only) a small stuffed animal (beanie baby size)

a small comb (no rat tails) a small square mirror approx 3”x 3”

a new wash cloth a sample size toothpaste (not expired)

a child size toothbrush – single packed a hotel size bar of soap

an 8 pack box of crayons

a thin 81/2 x 11 coloring book

Bigger is Not Better

All items we request are the small, travel size for one simple reason—we need to pack 50 smile bags into a box. Large personal hygiene items take up more room.

Keep It Simple – Personal hygiene items such as dental floss, lotion, and baby oil are wonderful items, however, are not included in our smile bags. Remember—we have limited space in our boxes. Any kind of food product, like candy and gum, is not packed for Operation Smile missions. International shipping prohibits sending food items across international borders. These items could cause all of are medical equipment and supplies to quarantined in the customs office. Keep in mind as well that hand-made bean bags can not contain real beans.

Medical Records Supplies – Operation Smile sets up a complete office upon arrival at a host hospital. We bring everything from pens to paper clips as most of these facilities can not provide these items. Each potential patient receives a medical chart and is given a complete physical exam.

Why do you need flashlights and D Cell batteries? In most developing countries, the power is bound to go out at some point. We ask all our team members to bring their own flashlight but wealso provide a few for the hospital wards where the patients are staying. We arm our clinicianswith flashlights in case there is a power outage—and it often happens!

Why do you send trash bags? Most hospitals incinerate their garbage. Operation Smile separates biomedical waste and general waste as we would do here in the United States. Heavy duty trash bags (55 gallon) allow us to clean up our waste and dispose of it properly. Why do you send Ziploc bags? Many patients are sent home with medication and supplies after their surgery. These bags are used for the patient or their family to carry the items home. Why do you send 1 inch masking tape? This is used for labeling supply shelves, hanging up signs in screening, and taping up boxes. Tape is a must on any mission. They are always in need of the following supplies:

Flashlights and D Cell Batteries Blue and black ink pens

Bulk file folders (colored) Sandwich-size Ziploc bags

Staplers (Bostitch or Swingline) Staples

Staple removers Scissors

Large rubber bands Scotch tape and dispensers

2 hole punch Glue sticks

Clipboards White-out (correction pen/exactliner )

Colored markers (10-12 packs) Black Sharpie markers

Highlighters (yellow, green, pink) 55 gallon trash bags

1 inch masking tape Pencil sharpeners

Child Life Therapy Toy Boxes

Operation Smile will accept new and gently used stuffed animals, arts and crafts supplies, liquid bubbles and other toys to help with screening, for pre-surgical and post-surgical play therapy, and to leave with the hospitals which are in great need of supplies for their pediatric departments. It is VERY important that no items included in your supplies have any religious symbols or markings on them so as not to conflict with cultural beliefs. Operation Smile does NOT accept war-related toys (guns, tanks, military action figures). We are always in need of toys that have wide appeal for a range of ages and abilities that are novel and sustain interest, and have inexhaustible imaginative potential or multi-sensory involvement. Operation Smile looks for donations of toys that work effectively to accomplish diversion, preparation, support, expression and meaningful interventions! The following supplies are welcomed for use with this program.

A gown pattern is available from Operation Smile Headquarters for $5.00 by contacting Donor Relations at drelations@operationsmile.org. Use plain or printed lightweight cotton or cotton/blend fabric, with the opening and closures in the form of ties or Velcro sewn at the back. Please use child friendly patterns avoiding war or religious themes.

Quilts / Blankets / Afghans – Quilts are another wonderful project for any club. All quilts require light batting. All of our countries get cold at some point. Although the child uses the quilt in the hospital, they do take the quilts home with them. This project is a wonderful way to provide warmth and comfort for the children of Operation Smile. Quilts/blankets/afghans need to be child sized: 45″ X 45″ or 54″ X 54″ or 45” X 54”. Knitted or crocheted afghans are also welcome, in the mentioned size. Cotton fabric is preferred. A light fleece can also be used. Please remember quilts should have light batting.
