Personal Care Products Safety Act (2015) - What We Are Doing

Since the introduction of The Personal Care Products Safety Act in April, the HSCG and our DC Advocate, Debra Carnahan, have been making trips to Capitol Hill to attend meetings with key Members of Congress. Our goal in these meetings has been to raise awareness of the handcrafted soap and cosmetic industry and to inform the Members how this legislation, if passed, would adversely affect small businesses all over the United States.

We have been concentrating largely on the Senate, as this is where the bill was introduced (by Senators Feinstein and Collins), and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) and Small Business Committees. So far we have met with the following Congressional Offices regarding this legislation:

In our meetings, we educate them on the handcrafted soap and cosmetics industry, showcasing the products that are made, how they are made and give a brief description of the types of businesses that make it up. We outline how ingredients are found and used and how they are combined to make the many products seen in the handcrafted industry. We discuss how any legislation aimed at the cosmetic industry needs to take into consideration the small businesses making handcrafted products by providing concessions, exemptions and resources.

Federal legislation has been introduced almost yearly since 2008, and we will continue to monitor. We will also continue to represent the handcrafted soap and cosmetic industry as a whole so that your voices are heard and your unique businesses will continue to thrive and grow.
