Following is a calendar of events tailored to soapmakers. These events have been submitted by various groups and businesses; they are not sponsored or endorsed by the HSMG (except, of course, our Annual Conference!

September 5 (Sunday) - San Diego, CAThis free meeting is open to the public and is for anyone interested in the history of soapmaking. Current projects include forming a petition to have the US Postal Service issue stamps honoring historic soapmakers and volunteering to do soapmaking demonstrations in Old Town San Diego.

September 5 - September 6 (Sunday - Monday) - San Diego, CAChoose the soap color and scent to make during this 2-day cold process workshop. On the first day, make the soap, pour it into the mold, and insulate it to saponify. Return the second day to un-mold the soap, slice the soap loaf into 10 bars, and take them home to share with family and friends.

September 6 (Monday) - San Diego, CABeginning-level class to teach students to make soap by hand at home. Learn soapmaking safety and learn to formulate soap recipes and calculate lye quantities without using a lye calculator. September 12 (Sunday) - San Diego, CAStudents learn the desirable soapmaking characteristics of different fatty acids, the fatty acid profiles of various oils, which factors affect the speed of trace, and which factors affect the speed of saponification. Students receive 5 bars of soap: Olive, coconut, palm, sunflower, and castor.

September 18 - September 19 (Saturday - Sunday) - Point Richmond, CACovers 4 classes on making all natural soap: Cold Process 101, CP 201 (swirls & layers), Hot Process & Big Batch / Production Soap. Take home 4 bars of soap, thorough handouts & a certificate of completion. This boot camp is mainly demo-style. No experience necessary. (10am-6pm, $325 +$35 MAT. FEE)

September 19 (Sunday) - San Diego, CAGardening and ingredient preparation class teaches students to grow, dry, crush, and add their own plant additives to soap and how much plant material to add for color and texture. Lecture includes green gardening practices, toxic plants to avoid, fire resistant plants, and California native plants.

September 19 (Sunday) - San Diego, CAThis free event features glassware maker Gary Stadler demonstrating how to assemble and run a steam distillation unit. Essential oils and hydrosols will be distilled from tea tree and rose geranium right before your very eyes! Fee essential oil samples given out on a first come, first served basis.
