1. Hello, each soap at LuZunika headquarters are made by me in my humble home. I make sure I make each soap with thought,handcrafted with my own recipe's and I pick natural ingredients. I love Essential oils but once in a while I will use fragrance oil . My soaps are mainly Organic and vegan but I will put it in my description if I used local Lard or Tallow from the nearby farms. Each soap is made with love and respect of the Craft.

Our soaps and cosmetics are made with high quality oils, butters, clays, honey and botanicals. Our soaps will clean but not leave you feeling dry. We use the cold process method and cure for a minimum of six weeks to ensure a hard but not harsh bar of soap. Any colors you see in our products come from the oils, butters, clays, charcoal or other plant colorants. We use only unadulterated essential oils for scent. 

We create bath products from elements that are primarily organic or wild-harvested to ensure that they are the best we can find for you. The only preservatives that we use are natural and extracted from plants. We do not test our products on animals. We are cruelty-free, paraben-free and phthalate-free.

Our story starts and ends here in West Virginia. I grew up in Clay County, and have lived in Hinton, Charleston and now Lewisburg. For several years before moving to Lewisburg, we explored other parts of this great country, living in Montana, Colorado, and Alaska before coming back home.

Our travels took us to some beautiful, but rugged areas. Living in cold and dry areas, and even an Alaska rainforest, we learned the importance of taking care of our skin. We also found it tough to find quality skin care products that don't have harsh chemicals and detergents in them. This led us to develop our own line of natural handmade skin care products.  

I have always been creative, so I enjoy designing products that not only pamper your skin, but also have unique designs and aromas. We strive to use only the best ingredients and handcraft our products in small batches here in the beautiful Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia. We follow Good Manufacturing Practices to create the highest quality products in each batch we make. This approach to quality assurance allows us to consistently have products that we are proud to sell, and use ourselves!

Here at Thistle & Barley we strive to create beautiful, nourishing, and skin-loving products, carefully curating each ingredient with these qualities in mind. 

The Thistle & Barley soap lab is based in Frogtown, (South Central) Pennsylvania. We make and cut every small batch of soap by hand which means every bar is unique. Although we try our very best to duplicate batches, due to the handcrafted nature of the soap there will be slight variations in size, color, and design of each bar. The photos on this site are for reference only.

All of our soaps are cut and then cured for 4-6 weeks to ensure the bars have hardened sufficiently to last longer. To extend the life of your handcrafted soap, please place it on a soap dish or other surface that drains well to allow the soap to dry between uses.

Set your brand apart from the rest with a fully customized soap recipe!

If you would like to develop a soap line as part of your brand, we recommend this option so that you will own your soap recipe as our recipes are proprietary. Recipe development starts at $600 and includes sample batches to test. Minimums are 144 soaps per scent. The recipe development charge is a one-time fee. 

Cost per bar depends on the ingredients you use. If you use all organic oils, specialty oils, expensive essential oils, etc. the cost will be higher. In general, these prices will reflect comparable wholesale pricing.

Developing specialty products in collaboration with brands is our favorite thing to do. It's a lot of fun! We love bringing our expertise and combining it with your expertise to create something better than either of us could have done alone!

FarmSudz was started in the basement of our farmhouse with goat milk soap being the first product (hence the company name, 'FarmSudz'). Before diving headfirst into soapmaking and skincare, I worked at the University of Michigan as an RN - running a clinical trials group that explored new therapies in Neurology, Pulmonary and Rheumatology. I had always had a keen interest in herbs and alternative medicine - and FarmSudz became my creative outlet to explore these interests. Our line of high quality soaps, creams and balms, designed to calm the senses and nourish the skin, are available online, at several boutiques throughout Michigan, and at our brick and mortar stores in Chelsea and Jackson, MI.

We started creating our own products in 2007 because of our interest in more natural ingredients and sustainable living. A hobby at first, we began attending farmers markets in 2012, and "retired" from teaching in 2013.

We opened our first store in September of 2016 on Trinity st, and have had a wonderful experience.  

In March of 2019 we purchased our own building.  The old Health Department.  We did a renovation and are now enjoying out new space at 101 Church St. 

We have been creating our own unique formulations and handcrafting all of our own products since 2003. We use only the finest natural oils, waxes, organic herbs, herbal extracts, floral distillates, pigments, essential oils, natural flavors and fragrances. Our products do not contain sulfates, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, talc, nanoparticles, GMOs, or any ingredient for which there are current or emerging health concerns.

While we are not a strictly vegan company, the majority of our soaps are vegan and gluten free (except where indicated) and we do offer many vegan and gluten-free cosmetic and bath & body products.

Our Story

We are a small organic farm and natural soapery dedicated to eco-friendly products. Our handcrafted products are non-toxic, rooted in harmony with nature and a deep respect for our bodies and the environment.

Through my own battle with chronic illness, I began taking a closer look at the products lining the box store shelves. I quickly realized most are full of toxins and wrapped in greenwashed labels, confusing customers. This set me on a mission to begin making my own natural products.

Our products leave zero waste including their packaging. Our glycerin soaps are even wrapped in Biolefin, a shrink wrap made from algae which breaks down into beneficial biomass (worm food) instead of microplastics and can be composted. We research every ingredient and go a step further to use certified organic ingredients where possible.

We could claim our products are all organic, yet doing so would be dishonest.  We source as much as we can from organic, eco-friendly and free-trade sources. However, it’s not always possible. So rather than making empty promises, we focus on finding the healthiest options from the trustworthy sources.

Our Beginning

It was 2004, and we lived in Bella Coola, British Columbia. A soap maker there encouraged me to try making my own plant-based soap. No tallow or lard. Just oils sourced from plants.

My first batch of vegan soap refused to solidify. So seeking answers, to the internet I went. I discovered two life-changing resources—TheSage.com and Zensoaps.com. I learned how to make lotions and develop soap recipes at Majestic Mountain Sage, and how to make hot process soap from Zensoaps.com.

I sold soap and lotion bars in Bella Coola until we returned to the U.S. in 2007. My career went in another direction for a few years. However, I continued making small batches of soap and lotion at the request of friends.

Then 2020 arrived. A webinar sparked the idea of launching my arnica lotion on Amazon. Then I found a reasonably priced THC-free CBD source—Essential Depot.

Now, I have five lotions, two creams and a body polish for sale. I also make unique plant-based bar soaps.

Having lived both in town and out in the woods in a cabin without running water or electricity we learned to make do with many things we have on hand and to reuse as many items as we could. Reclaiming wood and other materials is just as much of a passion of ours as is encouraging others around us.

NOTE: while almost all of our ingredients are organic and could fit under organic labeling, we will not make that claim as many others do. Truth is to be labeled organic, products need to go through a lot of legal hoops and many people do not know that they are really not supposed to use the term on their labels. Also, “organic” is over used and misleading in marketing today and we will not be going through certification to claim our soap is organic, which is the proper thing to do for labeling. That said, we do use all or close to all certified organic ingredients and at the very least use non-GMO for those one or two items we can not find or afford to pay for certified organic.

We try our best to buy from USA companies and when it is not possible to do so we believe strongly in using fair trade companies where possible with sourcing some of our ingredients and packaging.

We support organizations like Compassion International, Voice of the Martyrs, and OpenDoors with part of our profits and time volunteering. Because of Trish’s involvement with Voice of the Martyrs we are very aware of human conditions, both work and religious freedoms, around the world and strive to make sure that we are not contributing to the horrors of poor working conditions and underpaid or slave labor both in our home purchases as well as for the business.

I make my soap at home, on the St. Lawrence River. I enjoy my small studio with which customers can stop by and purchase my soaps. I also enjoy participating in Farmers markets during the summer when all the fresh produce is abundant. I am a gardener of fresh herbs and incorporate many of them in my oils to enhance my soaps. I love and study essential oils and love the way a soap can transport your mind and body to a wonderful place.

I love natural, homemade soap. I always have. I watched my mother make it on our small hobby farm in Michigan with home rendered tallow. I have enjoyed making soap and other beauty products occasionally throughout my life, and now do it for a purpose, not only for the fun of it.

Allergies to sulfates, most scents and a severe aloe vera allergy (among other things and foods) have made me thankful for my experiences. I can make products not only safe for myself (and others) but also products that I love.

We have several types of unscented soaps- hand and body, dish and laundry, shave and shampoo soaps that are scent, SLS, dye, sulfate, aloe vera, phthalate and gluten free. We have eco friendly packaging as well.
