She is also the President and Publisher of ForbesWoman, a multi-media platform dedicated to successful women in business and leadership. She is currently the host of Success with Moira Forbes, a video series on the Forbes Video Network, featuring candid, one-on-one interviews with today's top leaders. Moira also regularly contributes to Forbes' diverse global media platforms around the day's most relevant leadership trends.

Moira graduated cum laude with a BA in Art History from Princeton University, and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School program for Leadership Development. She is a mother of two young sons and lives in New York City.

Lee Choy is the creator and designer of The Bath Bomb Press.  She has been making bath bombs for over 16 years and designed The Bath Bomb Press over 11 years ago to press out her bath bombs without the fatigue from hand pressing.  After using her design for two years, she thought it could be helpful for others in the industry!  The Bath Bomb Press is now in almost every country in the world and Lee is always working on new mold designs and recipes.  Follow her on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube where she shares her customers beautiful creations.

Ariane Arsenault has been in the Soapmaking industry since 2003 and she specializes in Cold Processed and Melt & Pour soaps, solid shampoos, bath bombs as well as other handmade cosmetics. Born in the Magdalen Islands and raised on a sailboat, Ariane’s products are colourful and inspired by the seaside. She is always in search of local additives and sustainable supplies to create new designs and colour combinations! She is so happy to be here to share some of that knowledge and get creative with you.

Laura Badcock

After moving to the US from South Africa as a teenager, Laura later pursued a career as an aesthetician after discovering the interplay of diet, bacteria, and skincare on her own troubled skin and gut. She worked to treat skin of all types before starting to formulate her own products, eventually becoming a Certified Cosmetic Formulator and Chief Formulator at Essential Wholesale & Labs. The birth of her son helped her re-think the natural market and what type of world she would be leaving her son with. So started to focus on creating sustainable and green formulations to create safe products for not only the human consumer but also in the hopes of leaving her child with a future where sustainability has been key. 

She is passionate about educating customers and consumers alike on understanding “chemicals”, what it means for a product to be safe (not just non-toxic), and how even a simple scientific understanding can serve every consumer well.

Her day to day involves coming up with formulas for customers of all types, creating stock products for Essential, and overseeing production and quality control for thousands of gallons of product per week.

Eric Bockelman

As an industry veteran with 25+ years in IT and Information Security, Eric Bockelman has seen more than his fair share of the good and bad the internet has to offer.   Eric has worked in various developer, systems engineer, architect, and information security roles across academia, defense, software, consulting, and entertainment organizations.  Eric is currently the Director of IT Security and Collaboration for a multi-billion dollar game company, yet he still takes calls from his mother when she can’t figure out how to make her printer work.  Eric is currently helping his wife Erin oversee and operate VELA Bath and Body in Orlando, Florida.

Marla Bosworth is the owner of Back Porch Soap Company. She has been designing and creating soaps, natural perfumes, candles, blending essential oils and formulating cosmetics for 22 years. Marla teaches business and cosmetic formulation classes in New York City, across the U.S., as well as online.

Melanie Brown

Melanie Brown is the owner and operator of Serenity Soapworks and Mosaic Soapworks. She began her business in 2001.

Melanie was an elementary teacher for 28 years. In 2010 she retired and began to work her soap business full-time. She has been married to the love of her life, Gary Brown, for 45 years. They have 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren. He is an integral part of her business as the creator of her labels and marketing.

When Melanie is not making soap and other products, she loves to travel with Gary, read, and spend time with her family and friends.

Melanie Brown will be speaking on It All Adds Up: Using Additives to Make a Good Product Great.

Beth Byrne

Beth is an incurable formulator and teacher, and but she owes it all to a lavender plant. After moving to a new house, Beth found a plant she could not identify. Time and research revealed that it was lavender. That first herb began years of exploration into herbs and DIY cosmetics, which then led to selling skincare products for gardeners (www.SoapandGarden.com). She became a contributor to Saponifier Magazine when it resumed publication after a hiatus of several years. You know it now as Making Soap, Cosmetics & Candles Magazine. In 2013, she was promoted to Managing Editor.

A longtime fan and member of the HSCG, Beth served three terms on the HSCG Board of Directors and is serving again on the board after some time off. She finds it not only rewarding, but a great way to give back to the industry.

Teaching is in her blood, as well. She earned a BS degree in Education from Central Michigan University and has taught in some capacity since. She now enjoys teaching others to make bath and body products.

Beth is currently working on a book on basic lotion making that she hopes to release in early 2020.

When Beth is not working, you may find her in her lab, with her family or in her “Garden of Weedin’.” She resides in Rochester, NY, with her husband, Ken, and two dogs. They have six children and fourteen grandchildren.

Eileen Curtis has been the CSO (Chief Soap Officer) of Sunflower Hill for almost 20 years. Prior to, and for a time while, launching Sunflower Hill, she worked in IT sales and project management. The sales and project management experience helped her focus the direction of Sunflower Hill which was to sell wholesale personal care products to gift shops. She has learned a lot by trial and error, from a mentor group and simply being around and chatting with like-minded women. Product development often comes at the suggestion of her customers and has had success with certain products because she listened to those customers. She loves people and encouraging others to take that next step in their dream.

Sharon Czekala

Sharon is the Owner and Founder of The Great Lakes Natural Soap Company in Canton, Michigan. She has been making and selling soap for the last fifteen years to stores, hotels, gift shops, and boutiques throughout the country.

Sharon started the Great Lakes Natural Company in 2004 as a wholesale business. In 2016, she launched a new, upscale cold-process and hybrid soap brand named Places, expanding her business beyond Michigan’s borders and appealing to a much wider customer base.

Married for almost 32 years, Mom to a teenager, and an avid traveler, Sharon gets her inspiration from the beautiful places she’s visited in a lifetime of travel.

Sharon is a Certified Advanced Level Soapmaker, in both MP and CP/HP soapmaking as well as a Certified Soapmaking Teacher and a certified cosmetic maker.  Sharon teaches a variety of soap and cosmetic classes in Michigan and writes for a popular soapmaking blog. She Secretary of the HSCG Board of Directors, and has been a speaker at every conference since 2014.

Kathy Davenport

A love for all things handcrafted, a 10-year paralegal career, and a passion for research led Kathy White to study soap making and cosmetic formulation. With a focus on plant-based ingredients and anhydrous formulas, Kathy has built a product line for customers who want vegan, organic, “pure, clean and simple” skincare products. She divides her time between running her soap business, writing, speaking, and teaching soapmaking classes. She has written articles for a local gourmet, “foodie” print magazine, Edible Austin, Making Soap Magazine (formerly The Saponifier), and Soap Collaborative. Kathy also served as the editor of Soap Collaborative for 10 months. She has been an HSCG member since 2014 and a certified advance level soapmaker since June 2017. Kathy has been a speaker five times at the Lone Star Soapmakers Seminar in Round Rock, Texas, and teaches soapmaking classes in the greater Houston and Galveston, Texas area.

Kevin Dunn is the Elliott Professor of Chemistry at Hampden-Sydney College. He has been lecturing at HSCG conferences since 2005. When he is not studying the esoteric properties of soap, he may be found playing the bagpipes or launching giant rockets, sometimes simultanously.

Wayne Dunn is President and Founder of the CSR Training Institute and a former Professor of Practice in CSR at McGill University. He is a Stanford University Sloan Fellow with an M.Sc. in Management from Stanford Business School.  He is also the Founder and Managing Director of Baraka Shea Butter, a for profit, social purpose venture that sources shea butter in northern Ghana and distributes throughout North America.

Mr. Dunn is a Founding Member of the Global Advisory Board for the SDG Foundation and of the EU Africa Chamber of Commerce. He also chaired the inaugural EU Africa CSR Awards and Ta’atheer 2016, the MENA CSR and Social Impact Summit.  He serves on numerous other advisory boards and CSR awards juries throughout Africa, in the Gulf Region and around the world.

Dunn has decades of global social responsibility and sustainability project and extensive teaching experience having developed and taught CSR and shared value programs which are recognized by executives and leaders worldwide.

Mr. Dunn has designed and implemented successful projects worldwide, covering a range of industry sectors and including governments, international organizations and civil society. His work has won many prestigious international awards, including the first-ever private sector project to win a World Bank Development Innovation Award.  His efforts are used as global best practice and were featured in a Stanford Business School Case Study.

Wayne is recognized as a global thought-leader and is a frequent lecturer and speaker on business, social responsibility, economics, development, and strategy at events worldwide.

Kayla Fioravanti is a cosmetic formulator, certified aromatherapist, and award-winning author of twelve books. In 1998, Kayla co-founded Essential Wholesale, which was listed as an INC. Magazine 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America three years in a row. Essential Wholesale began in her kitchen with a $50 investment in 1998 and sold for millions in 2011. She co-founded Ology Essentials with her son Keegan and daughter-in-law Haleigh in 2017. Marie Gale has amassed nearly 20 years in the handcrafted soap and cosmetic industry.  During this time she has had her own soap and cosmetic business selling her products retail, wholesale and private label; served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild, and written three books for makers in the industry. Her preeminent book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling, has become an indespensable mainstay for soap and cosmetic handcrafters who want to comply with US labeling requirements.  


In addition to speaking engagements addressing soap and cosmetic labeling, her website (www.mariegale.com) provides a wealth of information about labeling and legislation. Marie works remotely as the Webmaster from the Seattle area, where she lives with her husband, their Doberman, Duke, and their orange-tabby cat, George.  In her spare time, Marie is researching her family tree.

Little did she know this money saving opportunity would transform into a full blown business. With over 20 years of retail and business experience guiding her, Sara’s article in Making Soap Magazine, Working Smarter, revolves around some of the common challenges soap makers face when transitioning from home hobbyist to small business owner. Sara is the proud owner of Sunflower State Soaps, and likes to spend as much time as humanly possible with her nine year old mermaid, Isabell.

Jo Haslauer

As the author of the book "Natural Soap Colour", Jo Haslauer has perfected the use of plant colorants in handmade cold process soap after years of hard work and dedication. Using her knowledge, Jo has written various articles, blog posts and magazine articles on how to use only plant ingredients to obtain naturally coloured soap. With plant colorants, the artful soap maker has shared the vibrant shades that she's been able to obtain from using plants only.

Jo has been a long term member of the soap making community, famed for her knowledge and "can do" attitude. If there isn't already a way to make the colors she wants, jo will experiment tirelessly with her beloved plant colorants until the impossible becomes possible. Jo combines her love plants with sustainability in all aspects of her business and infuses an infectious passion that is clear in her soap making and writing.

Marc Hight is Kevin Dunn’s roadie, but moonlights as Elliott Professor of Philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College. Marc has spent most of his professional career educating young minds and doing research in abstruse fields like metaphysics and the philosophy of religion (he published Idea and Ontology with Penn State University Press in 2007 and The Correspondence of George Berkeley with Cambridge University Press in 2013). In the past few years, however, he has been working in the philosophy of economics and business, and is currently a Research Scholar in the Center for the Study of Political Economy at Hampden-Sydney College. He has presented his work in the philosophy of economics at conferences in Europe, ranging from Ireland to Estonia. In his spare time he plays the bagpipes, sings in an Irish band, engages in deep thinking about games (which he also plays), and works hard at avoiding adulthood.

Jennifer has been making soap since 2009 where she fell into it by accident. Once she made her first batch of soap she found she couldn’t stop. She was fascinated by the science of soap making, but it was the design possibilities that captured her love for soap making.  In 2012 Jennifer officially started Jennifer’s Handmade Soap.  Jennifer continues to study her craft and experiment with new designs. She’s learned a lot, but there’s so much more still to learn and she knows she’ll be a soap student for life.

Jennifer’s goal is to always make a great bar of soap (or bath product) that is also visually fun.  Her business tag line is: “Because soap should be more than just functional.”  Color and design guide everything she does—from products to label design it has to have color and it has to make people smile.

Jennifer has her Advance CP and MP Soap Making certification as well as her Teacher Certification offered through the Handmade Soap and Cosmetic Guild.  She has been teaching soap since 2013.

Catherine McGinnis is the owner of Soaping101, one of the most popular social media outlets for soapmaking tutorials and advice. With over fifteen years of experience in the industry, she is passionate about helping soapmakers sharpen their skills via seminar talks, comprehensive classes and online videos. The style and know-how she offers in her videos and to the soapmaking community is an extension of her genuine nature. She considers soapmaking an industry where information can be freely shared and enjoyed.

 

When not in front of the camera, Catherine is the owner of a trendy soap store, The Soap Deli. She also created and personally directs the annual soapmaking social gathering, SoapCon, and serves as Treasurer on the HSCG Board of Directors. Specializing in soap, vegan and sustainable ingredients, and products safe for greywater systems, Kerri Mixon assists commercial producers with their formulations and manufacturing techniques. She joins us in Hartford, Connecticut, to present the culmination of her work in 2 different presentations, "Emulsification Systems" and "Hair Conditioner Bars".

Cindy Novack

Cindy Novack is the owner of Candles and Supplies.com, Inc. located in Quakertown, PA that she started in 1999.  Cindy started out creating in her home while still working full-time; selling through fundraisers, online, and craft shows. Candles and Supplies has since evolved into an operation with a large warehouse, a huge selection of products and ongoing candle and soap making classes. Cindy loves to help others create their own candles and soaps, be successful, and have fun doing it.  Cindy has been making candles for over two decades, has an Advanced Soap Making Certification through HSCG and teaches classes in her own store, art schools, trade shows and seminars.  In her spare time Cindy likes to read, horseback ride, garden, distill hydrosols and essential oils, travel, hike and basically just enjoy the outdoors and everything nature has to offer.

Marie Rayma is a professional graphic designer, author, and the creator of the popular DIY blog and YouTube channel Humblebee & Me. As a designer she’s worked with brands like Neal’s Yard Remedies and The North Face, and as a creator she’s written and photographed her book on DIY makeup—Make it Up: The Essential Guide to DIY Makeup & Skin Care, released by Running Press in Philadelphia. She lives in Calgary, Canada where she spends most of her time making colourful messes and taking pictures of them.

Soap Making started out as a way for Zakia to escape reality while exploring her own version of creativity. What started out as a hobby quickly transformed into a business with people from all over the world buying her handmade products. 

Thanks to the power of live streaming and social media, Natural Soap By Zakia was born with a growing fan base. She would broadcast live while making soap and share the finished products on Social Media increasingly people would come back for more and more and her nickname became SoapLadyZ.

She is the owner of Natural Soap By Zakia where soap nation buys her handcrafted products and Creator of Live Soap School where she blogs and teaches people around the world the art and science of soap making. She truly enjoys motivating and inspiring others to unlock their creativity through the craft of making soap. Finally she has authored the New Soap Makers Cookbook series to help new soap makers discover the craft in a fun and easy to understand format.

Jackie Thompson

Jackie Thompson, author of Liquid Soapmaking, is an HSCG certified Master Soapmaker and honorary lifetime member. Jackie credits her success in the soapmaking arena to her many, many batches of failed soap. Without them, she would not have bought her first vintage soapmaking book and begun her researching journey. Through research, trial and error, Jackie puts a new spin on old soapmaking skills. Jackie and daughter Gaily have been producing Gaily Rebecca Soaps since 1998.

Mindy Wright

Mindy Wright is Sonoma County based soap maker, entrepreneur, teacher, and goat farmer. Wanting to give her kids the country childhood that she enjoyed (her first pet was not a dog,but a goat named Sally!), she and her family moved to a small farm (and fixer farmhouse) in 2012. Her foray into soapmaking started as an attempt to utilize the surplus milk from our herd of dairy goats. She took classes with Jen Grimes and Ruth Esteves of the Nova Studio in Point Richmond, and was so smitten by the craft that it quickly transformed from being a hobby to a career changer for her. Her soaps and classes have been featured in Fodors, Edible Sonoma and Marin and Sonoma Magazine. She is a certified soapmaker and soapmaking teacher through the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild.

Clyde Yoshida

Clyde’s childhood interests in drawing and painting initiated his personal timeline of curiosity and creativity. He taught math and art in San Diego for over 25 years and wrote an article about assessing learning for the George Lucas Educational Foundation’s publication, Edutopia.


Although he is now retired from formal teaching, Clyde continues to teach and demonstrate art related topics in soap making on his YouTube channel, Vibrant Soap. “It seems like all my life experiences prepared me for a life as soap maker and presenter. I thought I was going to leave my teaching profession behind for good. Instead, I realize how the skills of teaching helps me to make my videos and prepare for conference presentations.

Clyde believes that the creative process is an extension of who we are as individuals. Focusing on our own sensibilities but being open to critique from those we trust is a great way to honor our imagination and build strong creative relationships.

Dave Yoshida began his professional career in the world of nonprofit organizations, where he held various staff and leadership positions and made countless public presentations on a variety of relevant topics. Probably the best skill he developed in his early career was the ability to break down complex topics and explain them in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand. Since establishing his tax business in 2006, Dave has continued to speak and train on tax and business subjects. Dave is an enrolled agent, licensed to represent taxpayers before all levels of the IRS. He serves approximately 700 clients each year with varying tax and business needs. Dave is thrilled to be part of the 2020 Annual Conference in Hartford!
