Angela Carillo
Angela Carillo decided to take her career in chemistry in a new direction after her kids left home. Boredom turned into a hobby in soap making, through a journey that led her from library research to classes, conferences and communities of other soap makers. Alegna Soap began as a business in 2010 and with the help of family and friends, she built a website, a dedicated studio, a logo and packaging, and started hitting the craft fairs. Her products are now in B&Bs, specialty shops, and are available for purchase online through her website Alegna Soap. Some of her soaps are also created for retailers who sell it under their own label, and she works with other soap makers by making their products for them. Angela is an HSCG certified teacher and teaches classes in soap making to elementary students in an after school program she calls Bath Bonanza. She has presented at numerous conferences across the United States and reached an even wider audience when she was invited to show host Kevin Pereira how to make soap on TV’s Hack My Life. Angela was one of a group of soap makers who traveled to Haiti to teach women how to make soap as a way to support themselves. Through her initiative, “Soap for Soup,” Angela regularly makes a special batch of soap from which the proceeds go directly to food pantry. Work-life balance is important to Angela, as she makes sure to reserve plenty of time for her new role as a grandmother. And, she takes the time to remember what she is grateful for in her life. You can read her reflections on gratitude along with ruminations about soap making on her blog.

The journey began in 2012 when Soap A GoGo founder, Scott Elgart, crafted his first batch of handcrafted soap in his kitchen. What started as a simple curiosity quickly transformed into a passionate pursuit. With over 25 years of retail and business experience guiding her, Sara gives back to the Maker Community by sharing tips and tricks in her Making Soap Magazine column: Working Smarter, serves as a member of Bubble Support for The Soap Challenge Club, as well as the Board of Directors for the HSCG- currently as the Secretary/ Treasurer.

The journey to expand took about 18 months, but has allowed the business to take on larger clients and have much help with the soap making itself. Susan now has more time for other hobbies on the farm: spinning and knitting with wool from the Icelandic sheep on the farm, playing and teaching Mah Jongg and serving as a board member for the farm's new non-profit foundation: Worlds End School of Thought, Agriculture and Craft.

The Made in Hawaii Festival was the first major show, with 40k shoppers. The only product sold was glycerin soap in 13 different scents. Not only did it sell out, but it now had several wholesale accounts. It was not the soap that attracted the customers; it was the Packaging. During the COVID shutdown, Lori began the year-long process of exporting to Japan, undergoing ingredient and percentage clearance of her now full product line. The most important subject for her Japanese distributor was Packaging.
ALori married her high school sweetheart of 39 years and has four children and four grandchildren.
