Bloodbath: Complete Rules

If you are interested in participating in the Bloodbath competition, please carefully read the rules and details below. If you have any questions, contact . The HSCG will not be responsible for any loss due to failure to follow the rules of the competition.


  1. Each team must consist of two specific and predetermined individuals, designated the Maker and the Assistant.
  2. The Maker must have a current Professional Membership in the HSCG at the time of application and maintain the membership at least through the premier screening at the 2020 HSCG Conference in Hartford, CT.
  3. The Maker must be an HSCG Certified Advanced Soapmaker OR complete HSCG Advanced Soapmaker Certification by December 31, 2019. The team may participate in the interview process and may even be selected as finalists while the Maker is completing Advanced Soapmaker Certification.
  4. The Maker and Assistant must complete the required legal documents provided by the HSCG, including, but not necessarily limited to, contestant contract, photo/video release and a hold harmless agreement.

Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in the teams total and complete disqualification and replacement by an alternate team.

Overview and Timeline

  • February 28, 2019 - Last day to submit application, which must include a link to the initial audition video.
  • March 15, 2019 - Twenty (20) Semi-Finalists are notified and announced.
  • May 15, 2019 - Semi-Finalist teams have final interview and audition at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Dallas, TX.
  • May 19, 2019 - Four (4) finalist teams and four (4) alternate teams are announced at the Annual Awards Dinner of the 2019 Conference.
  • 2020 Annual Conference - Four (4) teams compete in three elimination rounds until one team is left standing. That team is crowned the 2020 Bloodbath Champion.

Application Form

Each team that wishes to participate must complete and submit an online Bloodbath Application Form. NOTE: The application form requires a link to the team's initial interview/audition video (see below for specifications).

The completed application form must be submitted by February 28, 2019.

Initial Audition Video

Each team must submit an initial interview/audition video which will be reviewed by the Selection Committee along with the application form.

Video Content

The team should cover one or more of the following topics in the video:

  • What are the pros and cons of using natural colorants in soap?
  • What is soda ash, and how can it be minimized or removed?
  • How can problems in CP soap (e.g. lye pockets, white spots, brittleness and/or DOS) be identified and corrected?
  • What issues should be considered when moving from small-batch soapmaking to large-batch manufacturing?
  • What was the weirdest or most challenging ingredient you've used in soapmaking? How did it act? What did you expect? What was the final result?


  • Length: The video should be 2 - 3 minutes long.
  • Quality: Reasonable quality and view-ability on a video taken with your phone would suffice. It doesn't need to be a studio production.
  • Format: Any format that can be uploaded and then viewed online is acceptable.


The video must be available by an internet link. That means you will need to upload the video to a website or service that can be made privately accessible and provide a link to the location in your application. Some possible options include YouTube (preferred), Vimeo, Google Drive, iCloud, Samsung Cloud, or a personal website or blog (Make sure the link is PRIVATE!)

Semi-Finalist Team Selection

The Selection Committee reviews all the applications and initial audition videos and select twenty (20) semi-finalist teams. Selection will be based on knowledge, content, presentation, and personality.

Semi-finalist Teams will be notified of their selection by March 15, 2019 and invited to attend final auditions in Dallas on May 15, 2019.

  • Any semi-finalist teams that do not attend final auditions in Dallas will be disqualified.
  • The decision of the Selection Committee is final.

Finalist Team Selection

All semi-finalist teams will be scheduled for a final interview and audition with the Selection Committee on May 15, 2019 at the Gaylord Texan in Dallas, TX. NOTE: It not a requirement that the team be registered to attend the 2019 Conference. The interview will be about 30 minutes and and will be videotaped.

The Selection Committee will review the final interviews and videos and select four (4) finalist teams and four (4) alternate teams.

The Finalist and Alternate Teams will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on May 19, 2019.

The four finalist teams will receive complimentary registrations to the 2020 Conference in Hartford, Connecticut.

Alternate Teams:

  • If a team can no longer participate, an alternate team will be selected to replace them.
  • If a Team Assistant is unable to compete, the team's Maker will be given the opportunity to fill the Assistant's spot. The replacement Assistant and the Maker must re-interview (via Skype or other video service) with the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee has the authority to approve or reject the Assistant and/or to keep or replace the team.
  • An Assistant may only be removed due to terminated employement or relationship with the Maker, serious illness or death. Assistant changes due to the maker merely wanting a different or more skilled Assistant will result in the team being disqualified.
  • An alternate team will receive a complimentary registration to the 2020 Conference only if the team is selected to replace a team that cannot compete.

Each Finalist Team will be required to sign a contestant contract, photo/video release, and hold harmless agreement. The Contestant Contract will detail all obligations of the Contestant teams, which may include deadlines for materials, schedules for additional filming, or other requirements. Reasonable attempts will be made to accomodate the teams work and personal schedules. However, failure to meet any contractual deadline will result in disqualification.

Bloodbath Competition

The actual competition will be held just prior to the 2020 Annual Conference in Hartford, CT.

The four teams will compete in three elimination challenges. All four teams will participate in the first challenge, after which one team will be eliminated. The remaining three teams will participate in the second challenge, after which another team will be elminated. The team remaining after the third and final challenge will be the 2020 Bloodbath Champion.

The eliminations at each stage will be determined by the Judges Panel.

All the challenges, as well as interviews and other footage, will be filmed and then edited into "Bloodbath Episodes" to be released and aired at the determination of the HSCG.

Selection Committee

The Selection Committee will consist of two (2) HSCG Board Members, one (1) HSCG staff member, and two (2) HSCG Members (not Board members).

The selection committee will be responsibile for interviewing and selecting semi-finalists and finalists during the interview/audition process.
