Warning Required: Bubble Bath

This article applies to bubble bath products sold in the United States.

Bubble bath requires a warning statement on the product package.1

Bubble bath is defined as a “foaming detergent bath product.” It includes both synthetic detergent and soap (lye/oil) based products. It covers anything that is added to the bath to make bubbles or foam, including foaming bath bombs.

Adult Use Only

If a foaming bath product is intended to be exclusively used by adults, the label should bear the statement "For adult use only."

Foaming bath products that are intended and labeled for use only do not require a warning label.

General Warning Statement

A foaming bath product that is NOT labeled “for adult use only” must have the following warning on the label:

Caution - Use only as directed. Excessive use or prolonged exposure may cause irritation to skin and urinary tract. Discontinue use if rash, redness, or itching occurs. Consult your physician if irritation persists. Keep out of reach of children.

Bubble Bath for Children

When a bubble bath product that is intended to be used by children, the phrase “except under adult supervision” may be added to the end of the warning.

Caution - Use only as directed. Excessive use or prolonged exposure may cause irritation to skin and urinary tract. Discontinue use if rash, redness, or itching occurs. Consult your physician if irritation persists. Keep out of reach of children except under adult supervision.

Note that whether or not a product is intended for use by children is determined whether it says it is for children and also how it is presented and marketed. For example, a bubble bath product scented with a bubble gum fragrance and pictures of kids or toys would be considered a product for children even it it didn’t specifically state that it was for children.

Warning Statement Requirements

The warning statement must be prominent and conspicuous, compared to other words or text on the label and be well contrasted with the background. The text must be at least 1/16 of an inch high (see Labeling: Measuring the Text Size).2 The warning statement does not need to be on the principal display panel; it may be on the back or side of the package so long as it is readily visible.
