Sweet birch oil comes from the sweet birch tree (Betula lenta). It has a mint-like aroma and contains about 90% methyl salicylate. It is used for the aroma, the flavor, and for the therapeutic benefits of the methyl salicylate.

Because of the methyl salicylate content, there are safety requirements for the packaging and labeling of products containing over about 7% sweet birch oil.

See the article on Methyl Salicylate for complete details.
