Wintergreen Oil
Wintergreen oil comes from the wintergreen plant (Gaultheria procumbens or Gaultheria fragrantissima). It has a mint-like aroma and contains 96–99% methyl salicylate. It is used for the aroma, the flavor, and for the therapeutic benefits of the methyl salicylate.
Because of the methyl salicylate content, there are safety requirements for the packaging and labeling of products containing over 5% wintergreen oil.
See the article on Methyl Salicylate for complete details.
